DIY Double Chair Bench Plan – a sturdy, fashionable place to sit and chat.

Having friends over? This cozy bench makes for a great addition to any patio or terrace. And it’s easy to build! Made with 2x2 and 1x4 lumber, this design seats two people comfortably, and is meant to be durable and long-lasting.

In addition - it’s always great to be able to show off your own DIY furniture. And to encourage others to build their own as well! Why go to all the effort and expense of buying the premade stuff when you can just make your own at home?

And of course, the choice of wood, materials, and hardware is up to you – which is one of the joys of any DIY project. If you’re going to place this bench in an outdoor area though – we would recommend choosing a type of lumber that can withstand the elements.

Ideal for: patios, gardens, porches, backyards, family DIY projects, and more.

Ready to build your own? Great! Just check out the DIY build guide and diagrams below to get started.

Instructions

A note before starting -

Please understand - the below diagrams are genuinely and carefully designed to help you navigate the build process. However, we don’t include specific recommendations for which tools, hardware, or products to use. These truly are “DIY” designs.

As such – a significant portion of the build-process will be up to you, the builder. So please know, there is no “right” or “wrong” way to assemble any of our designs! If you need to depart from the instructions, or rearrange things along the way, feel free to.

The only thing we ask: please be safe! And of course, there’s no shame in asking an expert for help or seeking guidance from your local professionals at any time.

And please: enjoy the process!

Double Chair Bench Build Guide

How do you know which part is which from the parts list? Click on "Edit Design in 3D" button above and you'll be able to click on each part to see its name.

Step 1

First, you’ll want to build a sturdy frame for your bench.

To start, use the above diagram as a reference to gather all the necessary materials for this step.

Then, you’ll probably want to assemble your frame in steps.

First, assemble the ends of your bench frame. It will probably be easiest to accomplish this by laying your lumber pieces on a flat surface, in order to facilitate attaching them at exact right angles.

Next, assemble your center frame. This can be done like framing a wall. For example, it might be easiest to connect the outside edges of your rectangular center frame, and the install the horizontal beams across it.

Once your center and side frames are complete: measure vertically on your side frames in order to ensure the accurate placement of your center frame on each support.

Then, go ahead and attach your center side frames to each other.

Step 2

Next up: your vertical supports.

You’ll probably want to start this step by accurately measuring and marking each support and your frame to ensure an accurate build.

Then, go ahead and install your vertical supports, using the diagrams above and below for reference

Step 3

Almost done!

All you need now is a place to sit, and somewhere to put your drinks.

For this step, attach all your remaining 1x4” lumber in the appropriate places to form two seats and a center console.

And, of course, don’t forget the armrests.

And that’s it!

Congratulations.

Now it’s time sit back in your new bench, relax, and enjoy your handiwork.
